CONTENU GRANDE MARCHE 2018

THE CHALLENGE

A UNIQUE CHALLENGE, ESPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR SENIORS!

As part of the Healthy Aging program, COGIR private senior residences have been hosting, for the last 6 years, a unique large-scale activity especially designed to unite seniors and encourage them to be active.

Every year, over 1,500 participants from our network of senior residences look forward to taking part in this highly appreciated event. The concept is refreshed and improved with new elements every year.

This year, the 6th edition of this event, entitled La Grande Marche du Savoir, will be held from April 30 to June 22. Every residence will sponsor a school or a youth community organization and commit to organize a walking club at the residence. These walking clubs will include volunteer walkers, who will each walk distances suited to their specific physical condition. All volunteers’ steps will be calculated through the use of pedometers and the leisure coordinator from each residence will be responsible for counting the club’s total number of steps every week.

At the end of the 8-week event, COGIR will give $2,500 to the 3 winning residences in each of the following categories: the highest step average per participant, the highest participation rate, and the best weekly inter-generational activities. In addition, all sponsored schools or community organizations will receive $500 for the purchase of school supplies. All donations received throughout the event will be given out in time for the next school year.

A SIMPLE AND FUN EVENT THAT PROMOTES PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

  • Every resident who wishes to take part in the event will be invited to register to La Grande Marche.
  • Every participant receives a promotional T-shirt and a pedometer to count his/her steps.
  • Every residence will account all steps made by participants, every week. The progress will be displayed on a giant “step-o-meter”. All residence step-o-meters will also be displayed online for comparison purposes.
  • The overall network progress will be displayed through a step-o-meter on the Grande Marche’s website.
  • Every residence is responsible for organizing additional activities in conjunction with the Grande Marche, while complying with the educational purpose of this program.
  • Every residence will select an elementary school in the vicinity to sponsor, as part of this project.
    • At the end of the 8-week event, COGIR Real Estate will give $2,500 to the 3 winning residences in each of the contest categories. This amount will be used to purchase school supplies for the sponsored school, for the next school year.
  • In addition, all sponsored schools will receive $500 for the purchase of school supplies. For the 33 participating residences, the total donated amount will be $22,500 (30 x $500 + 3 x $2,500).
  • If they wish to do so, residents are also invited to donate to their residence’s sponsored school. Every residence will have a predetermined location for volunteer donations.
  • All donations (made by both Cogir and the residences) will be given to schools for the 2018-2019 school year, starting in September 2018.
  • Grande Marche closing events will be held to thank participants for their involvement.
